THE VENUE & BALLROOM INFORMATION

Venue History

When Raleigh closed down their Factory in Lenton 'The West Indian Cavaliers' decided to take over the beautiful ballroom and re-open it as Music Venue. Opening its doors in 1981 the 'Garvey was an instant stop off for reggae and rock artists of the time. This carried on for a number of years until rave hit in the late 80s.

Dance music became the music of choice with various clubnights, bringing all the biggest DJs and acts to the club with the likes of The Prodigy filling the ballroom to its capacity. Many years on and the club has a clutch of quality cutting edge club nights and has recently started back with some reggae shows, bringing the legendary DJ David Rodigan to the venue once again. The 'Garvey still holds the title for the heaviest sound system in the Midlands and to be honest the UK - but our sound man has hung up his clashing shoes.

Some of the acts we have hosted include; Robert Plant, The Prodigy, Massive Attack, Pigeon Detectives, Goose, The Kooks, Primal Scream, Belle and Sebastian, Fugazi, Tigertailz, LA Guns, Vain, Dodgy, Adam Freeland, Graham Coxon, Dead 60's, Inspiral Carpets, Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, Plump djs, Audio Bullys, Dave Clarke, Carl Cox, The Shaman, Grooverider, DJ Hype, Shy FX, The bays, Yoda, Justice, Randall, Kenny Ken, Top Buzz, Ratty, Jumping Jack Frost, Doc Scott, John Aquaviva, Slam, Paul Mac, Madox, Pendulum, Spamchop, Altern8, Estelle, Klashnekoff, yungun, Tes La Rok, Rusko, Curtis Mayfield, Edwin Starr, Elephant man, David Rodigan, Randall, Mampi Swift and many more....
